Q: Do I need rowing experience?

A: No. Students with or without rowing experience are welcome to join the team.  Around 80% of our rowers joined without prior experience.

Q: What qualities do I need to be a rower?

A: Ability to work with others, strong work ethic, competitive drive.

Q: How much does rowing cost?

A: Pricing varies depending on the money we get from the school and from fundraisers.  Typically, there is a low flat rate to join the team, which includes practice time and home regattas, and some team gear.  We have additional fees for each regatta out of state.

Q: What is your practice schedule?

A: We practice Monday-Friday at 5am-7am and Saturday at 9am on Tempe Town Lake. We know this sounds like a lot to handle, but believe it or not, you will get used to getting up early. It’s much more bearable to practice before the sun is in full-blaze, and you feel ready for the day ahead after practice.

Q: Is this a Division 1 sport?

A: No, both the Women’s and Men’s rowing teams are club teams. This has its upsides and downsides, but most collegiate teams across the country are actually club teams, so we compete against just as many schools as a D1 team would.

Q:  I think I want to try this out. What are the next steps?

A: Fill out the form on this page so we know of your interest.  If you have any questions, email  If you fill out the interest form, we will send you an email at the beginning of the year with information about tryout week & practice schedule.
